Makeup Removal – Why you should never go to bed without removing your makeup first?

Makeup is used for a variety of reasons, whether it’s to brighten your appearance, hide any imperfections or express your individual identity. Your busy life can often leave you feeling tired at the end of the day, wanting nothing more than to crawl under the duvet and look forward to a good night’s sleep. However, just as you perform your morning ritual, it’s just as important to make sure you also have a night-time ritual which includes removing your make-up. Makeup removal is key and good for the health of the complexion to ensure you have cleansed and moisturised the skin appropriately – even if you feel like you’re too tired!
Sleep is essential for the body so it can refresh and recharge, ready for the next day. This is also true for the skin, often working to repair itself, expel old skin cells, and regenerate healthy new ones. If you choose not to remove your make-up before going to bed, even for one night, your skin is vulnerable to significant damage. Here’s why;
1. Increased risk of breakouts without makeup removal
During the day dirt and debris builds up on the surface of the skin. Leaving makeup on, such as foundation and blusher, can mean that traces of these products can mix in with the dirt. This can then get into the pores and cause them to become blocked, preventing them from releasing oil and sweat onto the surface. It is the mixture of dirt, debris, excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria trapped in the pores that leads to the formation of pus; and the development of a spot.
2. Increased risk of dull skin
We previously mentioned the way the skin naturally exfoliates during sleep, leading to a brighter appearance in the morning. Leaving makeup on the skin overnight can prohibit this process, meaning that old skin cells can remain on the skin’s surface, this is why makeup removal is so important. This can prevent new skin cells from shining through, as light rays are unable to reach them. In addition, old powder and creamy solutions can settle into the facial lines causing not just a dull appearance, but one that is dry and itchy too.
3. Increased risk of dry skin
If you haven’t removed your makeup it’s likely that you haven’t cleansed or applied moisturiser either, which contributes to soft hydrated skin. If you have applied moisturiser without removing makeup, the barrier that unremoved makeup creates on the skin’s surface will prevent your moisturiser from absorbing into the skin properly.
It’s also important to note that some of the ingredients used in some cosmetic products will extract moisture from the skin and dry it out – so being able to sufficiently apply a hydrating product after wearing makeup will be essential for the condition of your skin.
4. Increased risk of eye infections
Leaving eye makeup on overnight, such as eye-shadow and mascara, can cause the eyes to become irritated and itchy. If this results in voluntary or involuntary rubbing of the eyes, small particles of makeup can land on your pillow and may get into your eye. In many cases, this can lead to inflammation, an infection, or the development of a cyst on the eyelid, again makeup removal is so important to the sustainable health of your skin.
5. Contributes to the ageing process
Free radicals are unstable molecules that can land on the skin during the day as it picks up pollutants from the air, or from the body’s own metabolic responses. As these substances are oxidants, when they are in excess they can cause oxidative stress to the skin. Oxidative stress is found to contribute to the ageing process, as it can help to accelerate the rate at which collagen and elastin break down. Removing your makeup can help to free the oxidative substances from your skin, instead of locking them on for a prolonged period.
