Why do we have to wear sunscreen SPF daily..?

Us skincare experts are relentless in getting the message out there about the daily use of sunscreen and why it’s so important. We’re sure you all know that sunscreen helps to prevent your skin from burning, but there’s more to it than just that. Using sunscreen provides a protective barrier on the skin’s surface, and will also stop UV rays from penetrating the deeper layers. This will prevent the tissues and skin cells from becoming damaged and pigmented (from an overproduction of melanin), which have the potential to mutate over time – the cause of skin cancer.

Why should you use SPF everyday?

Most people only think about SPF (sunscreen) when going on holiday, or if they’re going to be spending a considerable amount of time outside – especially if they’re fair-skinned or are prone to sunburn. Our advice is to apply SPF to the skin on a daily basis, and particularly on areas that are constantly exposed (such as the face, neck and hands), regardless of the weather or the season. The simple reason is that no matter what time of year, when there’s daylight there are UV rays being emitted from the sun that can infiltrate the skin. And, although UVB rays are largely blocked by glass, 50% of UVA rays have the ability to travel right through – reaching you even if you’re several feet away. Did you also know that UV radiation can be emitted from LED devices, so this can include your smartphone, laptop or other devices. Although this is at a lower level than the sun, your skin is still moderately at risk from cellular damage.

What’s the difference between chemical and physical SPF?

Chemical SPF, when applied, will absorb into the skin. These products contain a range of chemical UV filters, including: oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, octocrylene, homosalate and octisalate. When UV rays penetrate the skin the filters will absorb them before the skin’s cells do, which are then released from the body through heat.

Physical sunscreen on the other hand, will sit on the surface of the skin to create a protective barrier that reflects UV rays away from the skin. Zinc oxide and titanium oxide are the two main ingredients found in physical SPF which offer a broad spectrum of protection against the effects of the sun.

It’s often difficult to decide which type of SPF is best to use, and both types contain ingredients that are deemed safe by the FDA. Many people prefer chemical SPF as it doesn’t leave a visible film on the skin’s surface and is easier to wear. However, those with more sensitive skin or conditions such as rosacea, may find physical SPF has a reduced risk of causing irritation. As physical sunscreen blocks UV rays they can be more effective at protecting against cellular damage, particularly with hyperpigmentation and the acceleration of wrinkles. Yet, these products can be less resistant to water, so you’ll need to be more conscientious about repeat applications.

Whichever option you choose, one thing remains the same, daily use is essential.

Our Top 5 Sunscreen SPF Products

When choosing a suitable SPF you should ensure it provides protection from UVA and UVB rays. UV (ultraviolet) radiation is the energy that’s produced by the sun. It produces both UVA (ultraviolet A) and UVB (ultraviolet B) rays which are different in strength. UVA rays make up 95% of UV energy. They are not as strong as UVB rays but have a longer wavelength, and penetrate the skin to the middle layer (the dermis). UVB rays, however, are much stronger but have a shorter wavelength that infiltrates the outermost layers of the skin (epidermis). By using an SPF product that protects against UVA and UVB rays, you will prevent cellular damage and photoageing (premature ageing as a result of sun exposure). ‘Broad spectrum’ is another keyword to look for when choosing the right SPF which we advise to have a factor of 30 or above (50 during the hotter months).

SPF is included in many skincare and cosmetic products, as well as a stand-alone cream. With the summer holiday season just around the corner, you’ll need to ensure that this is the most important item to pack, and there are a number of sunscreen products available at our shop. Here are our top 5:
