What is Rosacea? How to understand the skin condition better
Rosacea Awareness Month aims to increase understanding and awareness of this skin condition. Facial redness is a common skin concern that can lead to severe skin conditions, such as rosacea or couperose, or if not treated in its early stages. This is a common skin condition that affects millions of people worldwide.
Rosacea is a long-term common skin condition, the symptoms can start to appear gradually and intermittently and then be more consistent and prominent every day. In this blog, we would like to share our knowledge about this condition and how skincare can help to ease the condition.
What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disorder that primarily affects the face, causing redness, flushing, bumps, and visible blood vessels. It can also cause burning, stinging, and sensitivity.
Rosacea and Chronic redness (erythematous) are common skin conditions characterised by the appearance of patches of redness and telangiectasias, which occur when dilated blood vessels become visible and show through the skin.
What causes Rosacea?
The precise cause of rosacea is not entirely clear. Certain triggers are known to dilate blood vessels in the facial skin, leading to rosacea. Genetics, immune system dysfunction, and environmental factors could all be contributing factors. Rosacea is not caused by poor hygiene and is not contagious. The redness of the area is due to an increase in blood flow that occurs when the small superficial vessels located on the dermis’s surface lose elasticity and end up dilating without returning to their normal size. Visible redness and telangiectasias are due to an abnormality in the function of the facial venous system or an allergy to microscopic mites that live naturally on the skin.
Various factors may exacerbate Rosacea symptoms and are often associated with exposure to certain triggers, common Rosacea triggers include; sun exposure, spicy food, alcohol, hot beverages, hot/cold/windy weather, stress/anxiety, hormones, and strenuous exercise.
Types of Rosacea
• Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea
• Papulopustular rosacea
• Phymatous rosacea
• Ocular rosacea
What are the symptoms of Rosacea?
Most people with rosacea will be affected by frequent or continuous facial redness which mainly affects the cheeks and chin. Flushing of the skin can regularly flare up which sees the skin become red and warm. This often occurs at impromptu moments and may only last for a short period of time. Additionally, the skin may be generally sensitive, and facial redness can be accompanied by a burning or stinging sensation.
The progression of rosacea can lead to small pus-filled spots (known as pustules). These usually develop on the cheeks these are much smaller than the spots seen in those with acne. Frequent flushing of the skin causes the blood vessels to dilate, and when this happens on a regular basis it can lead to the development of a thread vein – a red/purple strand-like lesion.

Your daily skincare routine is key so that you are using the right products to help ease the symptoms.
