SKINCARE ADVICE FOR ACNE / CONGESTED SKIN
As we’ve just celebrated Easter here in the UK, there may be many people who’ve indulged in the long-standing tradition of enjoying a chocolate egg. As chocolate is high in sugar this can cause an increase in blood sugar and/or a spike in insulin. Research suggests that this can lead to changes in the complexion. This may produce concerns for those with acne-prone skin, and the prospect of treating acne-prone skin, as it increases the chance of spots developing, or a breakout of acne.
What is acne?
This is a very common concern that can develop differently in different people for a variety of reasons. The main symptoms associated with acne are pus-filled spots, blackheads, whiteheads, or cysts, and whilst these are characteristic of the condition, there are actually different types of acne, including:
● Fungal acne (pityrosporum folliculitis) – this type of acne is caused by a buildup of yeast in the follicles which then becomes itchy and inflamed.
● Hormonal acne – often affecting teenagers and older adults, a change/fluctuation in hormones can increase the production of sebum (one of the main contributors of blocked pores).
● Nodular acne – this often describes severe cases of acne when the pus-filled spots on the skin’s surface are particularly large (known as nodules) and sore.
● Cystic acne – this type of acne will see the usual spots and nodules, but they will affect the skin at a deeper level. Cystic acne is more likely to cause scarring, especially as both the skin and underlying tissues can be damaged.
What causes acne?
Spots and pimples are generally caused by a build-up of excess dirt, debris, oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria on the surface of the skin. This mix of components can become blocked in the pores, triggering inflammation. This can lead to redness, swelling, tenderness, and the formation of pus.
Hormonal changes are one of the main contributors to the development of breakouts, as fluctuations can increase the amount of sebum (oil) produced by the skin. However, there are other factors to consider, including:
● Tight fitting head coverings – increasing the production of sweat
● Pollution – leaving dirt and irritants on the skin
● Unsuitable skincare – producing a greasy/oily surface
● Air humidity – increasing oil and sweat on the skin
● Stress – increases the production of the hormone cortisol
● Picking or squeezing spots – spreading inflammation to other areas on the skin.
How severe can acne get?
As previously mentioned, acne affects people in different ways. A trained skincare expert will be able to diagnose this concern, which causes frequent breakouts of a collection of spots. It mostly appears on the face, but some people also find it affects the neck, shoulders, and back too. Acne can increase in severity for some people, over time, which is often due to their genes. When looking for an effective treatment solution, it is often necessary to grade the condition:
Grade 1 – mild acne consists mainly of whiteheads and blackheads with a few pustules, Grade 2 – moderate acne sees multiple pustules on the face,
Grade 3 – moderately severe acne sees numerous papules and pustules (with some inflamed nodules) on the face, neck, and back,
Grade 4 – severe acne that includes numerous, painful and inflamed nodules/papules/pustules/cysts.
How can I treat acne?
When treating Acne, our shop has a range of treatments on offer to help improve the severity and frequency of breakouts. It’s always advisable to ask a professional when treating ongoing conditions of this kind. This will ensure the most suitable treatment option has been recommended for you, there are a variety of factors that we must consider, including:
● Acne type – inflamed (fungal acne) / non-inflamed / combination
● Severity – grade 1-4
● Skin type – dry/oily / combination
Our shop has a vast range of reputed brands, and we often find that certain products are ideal for certain skin types, including acne-prone skin. Reducing the severity and frequency of acne often involves the use of pharmaceutical grade skincare. This can be combined with a suitable in-clinic treatment to enhance the results. We require all patients with a complex condition, such as acne, to attend a comprehensive skin consultation where we discuss how to improve the concern. We put together tailored treatment plans and regimes which are often suggested over a longer term and include regular monitoring. It’s often the case that the needs of the skin will change as its condition improves, which means we’ll need to change your plan slightly in order to maintain the results (and even enhance them further).
It’s important to ‘treat’ your skin every day if you’re prone to acne, and not just when you have a breakout. This can help to regulate the causes of breakouts and maintain the health and condition of the skin. As oil is one of the main contributors to the development of acne, it’s advisable to avoid the following:
● Oily/greasy cosmetics
● Heavy moisturisers
● Dense suncreams
● Concealing with heavy cosmetic makeup
